Benefits of doing CrossFit

CrossFit remains one of the most popular and most contentious physical fitness trends. It focuses on varying operational moves within an high-intensity setting (for a full definition see here). From the article, you’ll learn three advantages of CrossFit.

HIIT challenges people to boost their fitness by building their strength and improving their conditioning during an hour-long course. Since 2001, men and women across the world, there are about 14,000 CrossFit affiliates globally, have been joining CrossFit gyms in a bid to get or keep healthy and fit.

Since it may be regarded as an option for high-intensity interval training (HIIT), HIIT has also become one of those top fitness trends in the previous five decades (Amadio et al., 2018). Scientific data surrounding CrossFit is lean. A study team worked on analysing the findings of scientific literature on CrossFit at a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Along with fitness, CrossFit is known for its focus on developing a community within the fitness centre. These gyms are places where folks meet, socialise, build camaraderie, and encourage one another along the road to fitness. CrossFit asserts its gyms are all about the community as well as fitness. And, as a cultural anthropologist analysing branded practical fitness, I would say they deliver.

In a master’s thesis, Harvard Divinity School students included CrossFit as one of ten places which”Millennials gather” instead of traditional religious institutions (to get a New York Times write-up of the study visit here). In other words, CrossFit is a fitness clinic that seeks to build a community around solid bodies and fit people, and for more than just Millennials.

The Study

In the study, effect sizes with 95% confidence intervals were calculated, and heterogeneity was evaluated using a random-effects model. Researchers examined studies from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Bireme/MedLine, and SciELO online databases, looking for articles which contain benefits of CrossFit.

This included studies with factors from short-term intervention studies, with participants, split into different gender groups to maintain consistency.

Male participants (60%) were used more in comparison to females (40%). CrossFit samples were composed of teenagers, adults and the elderly. The sample profile included 6 per cent aggressive CrossFit pro athletes, 63% coached individuals who engaged in CrossFit for more than six weeks, 22% physically active individuals, and 9% more sedentary people.

A minimal level of signs and a high risk of bias was discovered in the vast majority of studies analysed, indicating a great need for future research that includes robust and quality evidence of CrossFit benefits (Amadio et al., 2018).

From the CrossFit literature review, studies were found to report on body composition, psychophysiological parameters, musculoskeletal injury threat, life and health aspects, and societal behaviour. Five CrossFit fitness domains such as cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, and strength have been found in short term intervention studies.

The rest of the fitness centres, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy, were lacking in short-term as well as long-term intervention studies.

Because of this, a gap must be filled from the scientific literature on CrossFit instruction in terms of training burden. Managing the training burden and reducing injury risk could be appropriately used to support the custom of CrossFit (Amadio et al., 2018).

The favourable outcomes of CrossFit go past the sole scientific advantages of exercise, but the scientific benefits are overwhelmingly optimistic. CrossFit fitness domains like cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, and power are often used as interventions for performance in CrossFit exercise style.

Added domains like coordination, speed, agility, balance, and accuracy, can be better incorporated into a standard CrossFit exercise program.

From the scientific literature, Amadio et al. (2018) found:

Higher levels of a sense of community between CrossFit friends, peers, and coaches
Higher levels of gratification surrounding a physical activity
High levels of motivation to participate in exercise and physical activity as well as motivation to return to

Amadio et al. (2018) assessed the motivation for physical exercise in their meta-analysis. The classes used for comparison were CrossFit, resistance training, alone, and people who train with a personal trainer.

From the CrossFit class, challenge, enjoyment, and affiliation were identified as factors for motivation and adherence over all other training classes.

The sense of pleasure and challenge are often used as descriptors for sports practice in a group setting In addition to this research given by Amadio et al. (2018), research shows that the supportive team environment not only results in a feeling of community but also functions as the best instrument for exercise adherence. People who find self-motivation to be a battle can gain from the characteristics of CrossFit.

People who use CrossFit as their workout program describe CrossFit as a lifestyle option. This is a result of the simple fact that CrossFit embeds thoughts of holistic nutrition, in which daily diet struggles inspire participants to develop healthy eating customs, in addition to private development.

Since private development is embedded into the CrossFit training program, trainers and coaches are motivating and inspiring members of their community, offering hints and tips for healthy living.
